Femmunity Study

The Femmunity Study is a cooperative project of the LIMES Institute and the department of Nutrition and Microbiota of the University of Bonn.

Research Question

In the Femmunity Study immunological, metabolic and endocrine characteristics of the menstrual cycle are analyzed. In healthy young individuals, the extent to which hormonal status during the menstrual cycle regulates molecular signaling pathways that influence both immune function and metabolism will be investigated.

Study Design and Procedure

Over a period of three to five weeks, five examination days take place at the study center at four different phases of the menstrual cycle. Anthropometric measurements and an oral glucose tolerance test are performed at the appointments, and blood and fecal samples are collected. In addition to the on-site visits, the subjects will keep a study diary in which, among other things, information on possible complaints, menstrual bleeding, sleep, physical activity, as well as stress perception and mood are documented. In addition, body temperature and blood glucose are continuously recorded by a sensor throughout the study period.

To examine the technical and diurnal variance of the immunological data, a smaller control cohort of male (AMAB*) subjects are recruited.
