Metabolism and microbiome in patients with neurodegenerative diseases

In cooperation with the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurology of the University Hospital Bonn, we are conducting a study to investigate the metabolism and the gut microbiome in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases.

Research Question

In this study, individuals with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease will be characterized regarding different metabolic parameters as well as gut microbiome and compared in this respect with a defined control group. The aim is to evaluate whether differences in intestinal microbial composition and metabolic parameters are present and what role these may potentially play in the pathogenesis of the disease patterns.

Study Design and Procedure

This is a cross-sectional survey in which subjects will be invited to our study center for one day of testing after recruitment at the University Hospital. On this day, various anthropometric measurements as well as an oral glucose tolerance test with repeated postprandial blood sampling are performed.
